The Peruvian Connection was launched by a mother and daughter team, Biddy and Annie Hurlbut, which is followed today by halfway worldwide. Annie, when just entered her adulthood fell in love with unbeatable handcrafted mantas and ponchos in Cuzco. She also got the opportunity to see the luxury fiber of alpaca which was way softer than cashmere and durable. Her fascination for those ethnographic textiles made her collect them and learn everything she could with respect to spinning, dyeing, warp-faced weaving techniques and the ancient textile traditions. Apart from this, she also got the chance to see some extraordinary soft and luxurious knit sweaters in the same fabric- alpaca. Out of those sweaters, she even bought one for her mother’s 50th birthday which was nicely trimmed in long fur and was eye pleasing as well. The sweater was much appreciated by Biddy and her friends, the appreciation led to the importing of a small range of sweater styles, to which Annie added her designing creativity and manufactured in Peru, while her mother sold them at her home, Kansas. It was then when Peruvian Connection was born. The alpaca sweaters were sold to a few high-end specialty stores, such as Henri Bendel and Halls. The duo also created a small catalog where the photography, styling, and writing were done by the young lady, while the packaging and shipping of orders were handled by the experienced one. In 1979, Annie was spotted by a New York Times writer while showing her clothing line at a New York boutique show. The next day, a quarter page article generated 5,000 catalog requests, in just three months. Today, the Peruvian Connection releases five internationally recognized collections yearly which are enriched with exquisite art knit garments that are sold in the brand’s retail stores in the US and the UK. With the advent of time, the brand has grown successfully yet stayed consistent to provide artisan made, original designs to the people. Today, the Peruvian Connection is managed by a group of extraordinary designers who pay certain attention to each of the ethnographic textiles in crafting the best for the customers.
